My work is informed by the universal qualities of human relationships that connect us regardless of where we may come from, what languages we may speak (or are unable to speak) and how we interact with others. I am interested in a space where there is no formula and no formal path. I am interested in seeing and responding to the past, as well as forming a visual language for the delicate changing responsibilities of family, education and community.
In 2013, my son was diagnosed with a rare syndrome, Nicolaides-Baratiser. Raising a child with developmental delay has entered the studio. The images have become a healing vehicle between the unspoken love in the parent and the child connection. Using my son’s image allows me to reflect upon the small moments in life that show vulnerability.
I am devoted to the materials of mixed media drawing and sewing, specifically using paper mache, modeling paste, pencil, and drawing grounds to develop images that are both flat and physically dimensional. For example, in the series What I Could Do For You the parent caregiver is drawn flat while the nursing baby, the cared for, is sculpted dimensionally. This figure breaks the two-dimensional page forming a high relief sculpture.
